As heavy as it is considered to be for a dirt bike, it's like a bicycle compared to my BMW. The F800GS (and similar) bikes are good for riding a long way to get to some dirt roads. I've been on a couple of roads that would have suited the DRZ much better but the F800GS is much more capable off the pavement than I am.

One benefit of the smaller 75-degree, 1,050cc, V-twin engine though is the claim of much better fuel consumption than the bigger 1,301cc engine. KTM say the 1090 will provide 5 litres +/- per 100km, which is rather good for a big V-twin. So with a quick bit of math you can admire how far the 23-litre fuel tank will take you.
Comfort. The 1090 R’s riding position is as successfully compromised as its engine and chassis between on and off-road. On tarmac, over 350 miles, the seat is firm, flat and and pain-free – depending on your preference for seat widths, it’s likely you’d prefer the KTM to the slimmer perch on Honda’s Africa Twin.
The KTM is sweet to ride but probably not fun to own and maintain, whereas the Honda is a Honda. The Suzuki would be my second choice, as the V-Strom is pretty mighty by reputation, but I think the Africa Twin just gonna be the better valued, longer lasting and cheapest to maintain.
